Ukulele / Hawaiian ensemble multi-mic phase: close uke vs room, OH, and ensemble fold

Close mics on ukulele feel bright and present in the booth and on stage wedges. On club PA, studio mono fold, or livestream, body and strum attack often thin or cancel against room, OH, and ensemble paths that carry the same uke a few milliseconds later. That is usually polarity and arrival time between close and room/OH, plus a stereo uke bed that was never folded before send. Fix polarity and small delays first. Frequency-aware phase repair belongs only after residual L/R fights remain on stereo uke or ensemble beds before mono fold.

PHIXER is free stereo phase-repair (VST3/CLAP/AU · Win/Mac/Linux) from Riverflux Audio. Frequency-aware phase rotation for leftover L/R fights on stereo material. It is not a ukulele compressor, not a widener, and not a substitute for mic placement or mono audition of the stream or PA bus. Polarity and timing first; PHIXER after residual spectral fights.

What ukulele / Hawaiian ensemble phase failure sounds like

Fast mono audition (about 60 seconds)

  1. Solo the stream / PA / mix bus (not only booth headphones). Flip a utility to mono.
  2. A/B close uke muted vs open under room/OH/ensemble. Note what disappears: body, low strums, sparkle, attack.
  3. Solo pairs: close vs OH, uke vs room, stereo uke bed vs mono fold.
  4. Check correlation on the delivery bus, then with uke muted vs full.

Order of operations (before spectral phase rotation)

1. Polarity between close uke and room / OH / ensemble

Flip close vs OH, or uke vs room, when body or low strums return immediately. Guide: polarity vs phase. Related: acoustic guitar multi-mic, bluegrass / string-band.

2. Small delay align close to the room / OH image

Close mics often arrive earlier than room or OH. A few samples of delay on the close (or nudge to the hero ensemble image) often restores body better than any widener.

3. One hero uke / ensemble image to the stream or PA bus

Do not send close, OH, room, and ensemble spots all hot into the livestream or PA. Pick a hero image (often a focused close+OH blend or the ensemble pair), keep extras muted or low. Parallel stacks are classic hollow-body on phone fold. Related: choir / ensemble.

4. Prefer hero room/OH as the body; quieter color close

The close should color string detail and proximity, not replace the hero image for the stream mix. If the close sits at full level under a loud OH, mono fold almost always hollows body. Pull the close first.

5. Skip wideners and Haas on uke beds before fold

Short-delay width and stereo imagers make booth headphones huge and phones hollow. Keep critical low end and body centered for stream and PA.

6. Only then audition residual L/R spectral fights

If a stereo uke or ensemble bed must stay stereo and fold still hollows a band after the steps above, gentle frequency-aware phase rotation can help. Prove it with mono A/B, rotator bypassed vs engaged.

Studio / club / livestream checklist (to send)

1. Label close vs OH vs room vs ensemble paths

Name close uke, OH, room, and ensemble spots so operators know what hits the livestream or PA. Ambiguous stacks get left open and comb on fold.

2. Mono-check delivery bus alone, then with full uke

Solo body and low strums in mono. Then open sparkle and attack in mono. Note fights between close color and hero body.

3. Watch phone, social, and PA destinations

Most remote viewers and many dancers hear mono or near-mono. Guides: live FOH, club / PA, TikTok / Reels.

4. Optional null / mono workflow before show

When NOT to use PHIXER here

Quick path: Solo delivery bus in mono → polarity close vs room/OH/ensemble → delay-align close → one hero uke/ensemble image → quieter close under hero → skip Haas/imagers → mono-check with full uke → PHIXER only for leftover stereo cancellation on a uke bed → fold again for stream / PA / club send.
